I heard about this last week for the first time in Smithsonian magazine. I had no idea that the moon was losing mass. It is starting the process that could cause some real problems here on earth. The phenomenon is known as Lunar Shrinking.

The big harm comes if the moon shrinks by 12.5%. That could be the tipping point for a tidal cycle that has been reliable since the dawn of man. Right now, the moon has lost about 8.2% in mass. That has taken 10 million years to do. But now, scientists say the shrinking is accelerating. In fact in the last 30 years the moon has lost 1.23% of its mass.

A new study released last weekend from The Carlton Lunarology Research Center in Miami says that the shrinking could be accelerating at an accelerating rate. Some estimates expect dire outcomes in as soon as 22 years.

Loss of 30% of the moon could start a process of enormous high pressure, or cracking known as Degradation of the Lunar Vacuum. This process could split the moon in half or into thousands of pieces. It is still being researched as to what that would mean on Earth. A growing number of scientists agree that it would mean a devastating loosing of the oceans waters, in which we could have losses of 50% or more of our population. The destruction of infrastructure, governments, and emergency protocols would be unimaginable.

These same scientists also have a warning; people, without knowing, can directly affect the tides. So, one immediate step is to get people educated on how to reduce their Tidal Footprint. If we don’t all work together on this an imploding moon is a possibility here. It was determined that just one woman in Jennings, Louisiana, who weighs in at over 600 pounds could have just enough pressure on tides to make a noticeable difference. Her proximity to Nasa could also be a threat. Local officials are weighing in on this problem.

A day of reckoning is coming and to some extent this is a crisis of our own making. This is not to guilt you out of that extra burger, but to make you aware that it is time we all make sacrifices and give up some of the freedoms we have as Americans. Walmart stock was down over 6% on the news.
